How it works
Understanding dust mites
What you should know about house dust mites
“House dust mites are arachnids, not insects, and are related to ticks, spiders, and harvestmen.”
— M.J. Colloff, “Dust Mites,” 2009
House dust mites are microscopic arachnids measuring just 0.1 to 0.4 mm in length.
They are invisible to the naked eye and thrive in our homes—particularly in beds, carpets, household dust, curtains, and other textiles—feeding primarily on dead human skin and hair.
The most common species in Europe is Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus.

Why dust mites are harmful?
Dust mites are one of the leading sources of indoor allergens and play a central role in triggering conditions such as:
- Asthma
- Allergic rhinitis
- Atopic dermatitis
Over 95% of allergenic particles are linked to:
- Mite feces
- Eggshell remnants
- Decomposed mite bodies
Mite droppings contain undigested food and powerful digestive enzymes. These enzymes help mites break down dead skin and other organic matter, and are themselves highly allergenic.
After being expelled, mite feces remain in the environment. They dry out, disintegrate into microscopic particles (10–40 µm in diameter), and become airborne—easily inhaled by humans. Their size is comparable to pollen grains, another common allergen.
A single gram of household dust can contain up to 1,000 mites, each producing about 20 droppings per day.
Health impact of inhaled mite allergens
The small size of these fecal particles is particularly concerning for people with dust mite allergies.
Here’s why:
- Particles >10 µm usually settle in the upper respiratory tract (trachea, bronchi)
- Particles <10 µm can reach the alveoli, the deep lung regions responsible for gas exchange
Once inhaled, these particles can activate both innate and adaptive immune responses, leading to airway inflammation. In people sensitive to house dust mites, this can result in:
- Increased IgE antibody levels
- Overactive T-helper 2 (Th2) cells
- Heightened airway hypersensitivity
Key allergens like Der p 1 and Der p 2 stimulate the immune system through pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), triggering allergic inflammation.
Der p1 is one of the most dangerous and widespread allergens produced by dust mites. It is a powerful enzyme found in mite droppings and is a major trigger for allergic reactions.
The Role of Probiotics in Allergy Defense
One promising strategy for managing house dust mite allergies involves immunomodulation—regulating immune responses using regulatory T cells (Tregs) and secretory IgA antibodies.
Recent studies have shown that probiotics can:
- Enhance IgA secretion
- Increase the number of Treg cells
- Support immune system balance
